Braid-Free Crochet Space Buns Tutorial
This tutorial will show you how to make braid-free crochet space buns on natural hair
Space Buns are a super cute hairstyle that just begs for a crochet technique to pump them up. This tutorial will show you how to get soft, full space buns without braids. It’s a quick style that works well on natural or transitioning hair.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Denman brush
- Boar bristle brush
- Styling gel
- Faux Remy Caribbean hair (one pack per space bun)
- Ponytail holders
- Bobby pins
Step 1: Create two ponytails; section out the middle of each & secure
Start with clean, detangled hair. Part hair down the center and make two ponytails. Section out the middle portion of one ponytail, leaving hair around the perimeter loose. Pin loose hair aside.
Step 2: Crochet hair through base of inner ponytail
Push the closed hook of the crochet needle through hair just outside of the ponytail holder holding the middle section of the ponytail. Once the crochet needle is through the hair, open the hook and attach 5-8 coils of hair to the crochet hook. Close the hook and pull the loop through. Loop the loose end of the hair through the loop created with the crochet needle. Pull to secure onto the base of the inner ponytail.
Step 3: Crochet hair around all sides of ponytail holder
Crochet the hair around all sides of the ponytail holder. You will only need to knot the hair once per pass with the crochet needle. The ponytail holder will prevent the crocheted hair from slipping.
Step 4: Gather crocheted hair and perimeter hair into a single ponytail
Gather perimeter hair and crocheted hair into a bundled ponytail. Use gel and smooth with a brush. Wrap loose ends of natural hair around the base of the ponytail.
Step 5: Wrap ponytails to make space buns
Gather the ponytail hair and loosely wrap around itself to make space buns. Secure with a ponytail holder and pins.
