Havana twists – a recent African American hair trend, as seen on high profile celebrities like Solange, Beyonce, Keyshia Cole and others. Havana twists are made from a variety of twists and turns in your hair. The name sounds funny to those not familiar with it (it may even sound like a pretzel brand), until you Google it and sees it’s a wonderful solution to thick hair! Havana twists are similar to Marley braids hair; however, different in quality. These braids have been seen on numerous social networks including Tumblr and Instagram. The hairstyle includes chunky twists, done with natural hair and extensions.

Types of Hair to Use for Havana Twists
Havana twists hairstyles can be used for a variety of hair types, they can be installed with extensions like Havana Hair, which can be ordered through several hair extension websites. Usually, the ideal hair used for twists include kinky curly hair due to the flexibility. The length does not matter due to the extensions. The looser the twists, the thicker the look. This hairstyle can be done both at home and at a salon. They usually cost more to install than a Marley twist. Havana braids extensions usually cost around $12.99 per pack, and Marley hair extensions cost around $5.99 per pack. The common wavy hair type requires three packs of Havana hair. Advantages of Havana twists compared to Marley twists include the thickness and the duration of the twists.
How Long to Keep Havana Twists in
Havana twists hairstyles, as cute and funky as it seems, should not be left in for too long. All hairstylists can come to an agreement that they should not be left in longer than six weeks. If the twists are stayed on longer, they can damage the overall health of the hair, and can lead to a scalp infection due to lack of scalp cleansing. Make sure when getting the twists styled, the hairstylist does not put too much pressure onto the “baby hairs” or the short hair. It is also recommended to undo and redo the twists every two weeks to not only look fresh and frizz free, but also prevents breakage of the hair strands.
How to Do Havana Twists
The salon charges around $200 for installing the twists. However, I discovered there are several YouTube videos that teach the twisting method in a few easy steps. For beginners, the process can take from 3-5 hours. It seems simple; however, the process might take a while. Before installing Havana twists, it is recommended one washes their hair with a cleansing solution, typically a replenishing shampoo and conditioner. After washing the hair, one must apply oil to make the hair softer and smoother. The styling process includes parting the hair into four, twisting smaller sections, and crossing the twisted sections in a counter clockwise direction. After the hair is twisted to desired thickness, dip the tip of the hair into hot water. This hairstyle is so unique and different; however, it requires careful monitoring in order to prevent hair breakage. One can still wash their hair throughout the week, careful not to ruin the braids.
